Officials from the The Ministry of Domestic Trade, Co-Operatives and Consumerism (MDTCC) in Borneo have foiled another fuel-smuggling attempt, intercepting a lorry transporting roughly 10,000 litres of subsidised diesel in Bintulu.
The 15-tonne lorry was found to be transporting the fuel, worth an estimated estimated RM18,000 in a specially-modified tank. According to MDTCC state director Wan Ahmad Uzir Wan Sulaiman, initial investigations revealed the fuel was originally destined for a fuel service station in Belaga, but that the smugglers intended to sell it at industrial areas in Bintulu. “The modus operandi of the group was to purchase the subsidised diesel from a fuel depot in Bintulu before quickly re-selling it at industrial zones at a lower price,†he said.
Wan Ahmad also revealed that an attempt had been made to confuse authorities, as MDTCC officers in Kapit detected a similar lorry in Belaga bearing the same licence plate number as the one detained in Bintulu. Investigations are currently ongoing, he said.
