Spacer France: CTG Union Threatens Strike Over Refinery Closur (26/10/2012)

Members of the CTG Union will strike for one day on November 5 in an attempt to draw attention to refinery closures that have taken place across the country in recent times. Four French refineries have closed in the last four year and the union’s members say they want the government to intervene in order to save their industry.
“The strike is a protest against the possible closure of the Petit-Couronne refinery, but also a demand for a solution to keep the industry afloat,” said one of the leaders of the CTG Union, Charles Foulard.
The French oil industry, like many in Europe, is struggling to compete with the larger operations in the Middle East and Asia. Operational difficulties at the Petit-Couronne are the latest example of its strife.
Petroplus, the company which operated the refinery, filed for insolvency at the beginning of 2012 and sold off three of its refineries to cover costs. One of them has since been converted into a fuel terminal.
