Australia: Scrutiny on Retailers After Caltex Closure (08/08/2012)

The decision of Caltex to close the Kurnell oil refinery in Sydney will not result in supply problems for Australian fuel retailers, according to Resources Minister Martin Ferguson, while the Automobile Association of Australia's Andrew McKellar has warned that fuel prices will be under close scrutiny following the move.
McKellar told reporters that retailers and suppliers “need to be put on notice that this is not an opportunity to unjustifiably push up margins,” adding that “they need to be under scrutiny to ensure that they don't use this as an opportunity to manipulate the price cycle . . . at the expense of consumers.'' His comments were backed up by a Senior Policy Analyst from the Automobile Association of South Australia, Chris West, who said that the closure should have "no effect'' on petrol prices because the state had long relied on oil imported from Asia.
Meanwhile, former Reserve Bank board member Warwick McKibbin responded to the news of the closure by calling for a case-by-case assessment into the profitability of key industries. The economist told The Australian newspaper that global adjustments in consumption and production were producing "changes on a magnitude we haven't seen before", and that policymakers needed to respond.
