China: Beijing to Introduce New Fuel Standard (23/05/2012)

The Beijing Municipal Environmental Protection Bureau has announced that it will be introducing a new fuel standard for the city, similar to the EU’s Euro V model. The new regulations are expected to reduce sulphur dioxide emissions by 10 to 50mg per kg, said the bureau, which also moved to quash concern surrounding a price increase by saying that fuel prices will remain the same for the second half of the year.

“The new Beijing V standard fuel will greatly reduce the amount of pollutants in the air, including PM 2.5 (particulate matter with a diameter smaller than 2.5 micrometres),” said the Director of the Bureau’s vehicle management body, Li Kunsheng. “The capital will become the first to meet the benchmark nationwide.”
Li added that while the city’s 5m car exhausts are a major pollutant in the city, the new standard will reduce consumption and enhance engine efficiency.  Petrolworld last reported on environment efforts by Beijing in advance of the Olympics when efforts were made to raise environment standards within fuel fdistribution and the servcie station network.
