Vietnam: Car Fires Caused by Sub-Standard Fuel, Says Report (21/05/2012)

A string of vehicle fires in Ho Chi Minh City have been caused by poor quality fuel, according to the local Tuoi Tre newspaper. The report cited investigation results from regional authorities in the city, which included testing by the Refinery and Petrochemical Technology Research Center and HCM City University of Technology.

Specifically, scientists found that fuel that was improperly blended with low-quality additives such as methanol and ethanol lead to petrol leakage. The risk was found to be higher in the case of motorcycles.

The research team recommended that the relevant authorities investigate the presence of methanol and ethanol in petrol and issue a ban on the sale of petrol A83 with a low-octane index. The research follows 324 motorcycle and automobile fires in Vietnam over the past two years. 59 motorcycle fires and 56 automobile fires have occurred in the year to date.
