Sri Lanka: Damaged Pipeline Causes Sapugaskanda Closure (08/09/2012)

Sri Lankan authorities have been forced to close the Sapugaskanda refinery after a floating pipeline sustained damage on Saturday. The 50,000 barrel facility, the only refinery in Sri Lanka, will reopen in a “few days”, said an official.
“Engineers have been working since Friday to repair the damaged pipeline and are waiting for spares from abroad,” said Pradeep Roshen, a spokesperson for the country’s Petroleum Ministry. He said that demand will not be affected by the closure as sales usually slow around this time of year – the region’s monsoon season – and that two recent diesel deliveries totaling 75,000 tonnes are ready for general distribution.

The refinery is part owned by Ceylon Petroleum, Sri Lanka’s state-run oil producer.
