India: Retailers Warn of Shortages After Industrial Action (01/10/2012)

Fuel retailers have warned that motorists could face a shortage of petrol and diesel late on October 2 and on October 3, after a decision by members of the Petrol Dealer's Association of Mumbai not to purchase fuel on either October 1 or 2. Owners of fuel service stations are seeking implementation of the Apurva Chandra committee report, along with an increase in the commission paid to retailers.
Ravi Shinde, President of the organisation, said that ultimate responsibility for shortages did not lay with members. “We have decided to protest by not buying petrol and diesel on Monday and Tuesday. We will serve the customers till the last drop of fuel available at the pumps. The oil companies should be held responsible for any inconvenience caused.”
Further planned action by the group will see retailers only working one shift on October 15, from 9am to 5pm. “This means that you have to queue up during the day, like autos and taxis, to fill petrol and diesel,” said Shinde.
