Singapore: Singapore to Move on Cleaner Fuel Standards (08/09/2012)

Refineries in Singapore will soon be obligated to provide fuels that contain less than 10 parts per million of sulphur as the country looks to follow its Asian neighbours in cleaner up its emissions. The new rules will come into effect at the beginning of 2014, and will apply to both petrol and diesel, the country’s National Environmental Agency says. In the last year, India, China and Thailand have also promised to introduce similar policies.
“Power stations are also working towards cleaner fuels for their energy needs in order to lower sulphur dioxide emissions,” said the agency in a statement. “As the power stations and industries switch to the use of cleaner fuels to reduce sulphur dioxide, there will also be a reduction in other pollutants.”

Singapore, which exports both petrol and diesel, consumes around 23,000 barrels of fuel a day.
