Myanmar: PTT Aiming to Set Up Retail Network (04/10/2012)

Thai energy company PTT has said that it will establish an oil retailing business in Myanmar (formerly Burma), a plan which it says is in line with its ambition to become a regional fuel retailer in the next five year. PTT, which says that it will look for a partner firm to join it in the venture, could be the first oil company to enter the country since trade rules were relaxed last year.
PTT has said that it has already established PTT Oil Myanmar Ltd, which will act on its behalf in Burma, subject to the approval of the company’s board of directors.
“Myanmar has very strong potential in the oil retailing business. Demand is expected to grow sharply after the country opens to foreign investors and tourists,” said Auttapol  Rerkpiboon, PTT’s executive vice-president for communication and international markets.
Despite more companies planning to move into the country, demand at present is extremely low compared to Thailand and neighbouring Cambodia. The average person in Myanmar consumes just 38 litres of fuel per year, compared to 700 litres in Thailand and 140 litres in Cambodia.
